KUCHING – It would be a bleak Hari Raya for about 100 family members after their houses were razed in a dawn fire today at Kampung Tabuan Melayu.

Three families who were staying near the river were forced to jump into the river to save themselves as they were unable to go to the front of the house which was razed.

Two rows of houses facing each other were razed. The fire started in the centre of the 13 houses which was rented out. Due to the closeness of the houses, the fire spread to the opposite side.

A contractor said when he heard shouts of fire, he rushed out and forgot to get his RM60,000 cash which he collected yesterday. He said those houses razed were mostly relatives.

Most of the family members were unable to save their belongings as fire spread fast due to the strong wind this morning.

According to Kuching Fire Chief, Baharuddin Idris, the Fire and Rescue Services received a distress call at 5.40 am. Two minutes later they arrived at the scene and about half an hour later, the fire was under control.

He said the cause and estimated loss was still being investigated.

Three fire-engines from Tabuan Jaya, Padungan and Batu Lintang rushed to the scene to help put out the fire.
