AGUNG BEAT REPRESENTS SABAH AT RWMF 2011 Kuching, 23 June 2011 – One of the two Malaysia’s only representative to perform this year at the Rainforest World Music Festival is the AgungBeat from the neighboring state of Sabah. AgungBeat is a nineteen-member gamelan ensemble from Sabah that performs new arrangements of traditional Sabahan music, as well as their own contemporary compositions.

Led by composer and lecturer Roslee Haji Wahid, the ensemble’s members are from a variety of ethnic background such as Kadazan, Dusun, Chinese, and Malay, all majoring in music performance at University Malaysia Sabah (UMS). AgungBeat has been actively performing in numerous festivals and events in the region such as the Festival Gamelan IPTA, and the Festival Gamelan Sedunia. This is the first performance of gamelan at the Rainforest World Music Festival. The gamelan is an ensemble of metallophones, xylophones, drums, and gongs native to Malaysia and Indonesia. Each region has its own particular style and repertoire, with gamelan ensembles ranging in size from five or six persons to more than two-dozen performers. Depending on the region, style, and function, gamelan music can range from trance inducing floating melodies, to fiery displays of virtuosity. AgungBeat will turn up as the first performer to heat up the Rainforest World Music Festival stage on the very first night on July 8. AgungBeat will also perform on the daily Musical Workshop at Dewan Lagenda within the festival site that involved all drummers and dancers. This unique “Drum Dance” session will be a mixer of musical performance by other musicians from Canada, Georgia, Kenya, UK and USA. SIBU,11 April 2011: Sebuah helikopter terhempas dari ketinggian 10 kaki ketika hendak berlepas dari Sibu Townsquare. Kejadian itu berlaku selepas helikopter tersebut menurunkan anggota rombongan Timbalan Perdana Menteri, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. Sebelum kejadian tersebut, tiga helikopter membawa rombongan timbalan perdana menteri balik dari Bintangor ke Sibu Bagaimanapun, Tan Sri Muhyiddn tidak menaiki helikopter yang terhempas itu. Menurut OCPD Sibu, ASP Shafie Ismail, kejadian itu berlaku pada jam 1.50 tengahari selepas helikopter itu menurunkan semua penumpangnya di Sibu Townsquare. “Helikopter tersebut hendak berlepas balik ke lapangan terbang untuk disimpan, (tetapi) kemudian jatuh dari ketinggian 10 kaki,” katanya. Berikutan itu, juruterbangnya mengalami kecederaan dan dihantar ke hospital. Dua daripadanya adalahmilik Hornbill Skyways, dan helikopter yang terhempas itu adalah dari Sabah Air.

KUALA LUMPUR: An AirAsia flight to Kuching skidded off the runway Monday night and landed on the grass verge, leaving four passengers with minor injuries.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said flight AK5218, an Airbus A320, was carrying 124 passengers and six crew members.

Kong said the plane had landed on soft soil on the edge of the runway. AirAsia and Kuching International Airport staff are working to remove the plane for checks.

As a result of the incident, services at the airport have been was disrupted, with up to 11 flights to the airport affected.

Kuching airport closed temporarily

KUCHING: The Kuching International Airport has been closed Tuesday until further notice, a Malaysia Airports Bhd statement said.

This is becaused of an incident Monday night, when an AirAsia aircraft (flight AK5218 from Kuala Lumpur), skidded and veered off the airport’s runway 25, when landing at 10.02 during heavy rain.

All passengers were evacuated safely from the aircraft.

Efforts to remove the aircraft Tuesday were hampered by continuous heavy rains.

An AirAsia flight to Kuching skidded off the runway Monday night and landed on the grass verge, leaving four passengers with minor injuries.

Only one flight was released for departure from the airport, flight MH2505 to Kuala Lumpur.

All AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines flights from the airport have been effected.

Passengers are advised to contact their airline’s offices to enquire about their flight status.
