Using Hotmail as a secondary address? Be very careful

windows-live-hotmail

If you’re like me, you have at least two email addresses. One of these email addresses is for important business; you hand it out to co-workers, friends, and family, whose emails you actually want to pay regular attention to. The second email address is for other stuff, like signing up for newsletters, shopping online, or creating accounts for services on the web. Also, if you’re like me, you might tend to forget to pay attention to that second email address for days, weeks, or months at a time. As it turns out, forgetting to check a free Windows Live Hotmail account might have some dire consequences.

According to the Windows Live help files:

Free Windows Live Hotmail accounts become inactive if you don’t sign in for more than 270 days if the account stays inactive for an additional 90 days, the account name may be permanently deleted. If you don’t use your Windows Live ID for 365 days, your Windows Live ID may be permanently deleted. or within the first 10 days after signing up for an account. After an account becomes inactive, all messages, folders, and contacts are deleted. Incoming messages will be sent back to the sender as undeliverable. Your account name is still reserved. However,

What does this mean to someone who is using a Hotmail address to sign up for things on the web? It means that, once your year of inactivity has passed, anyone can sign up for a Windows Live account with your expired username. The unintentional side effect of this is that if your Windows Live account expires, one could potentially create an account with the same name and use the password reset function on almost any online service attached to that email address, receive the email with the password (or further instructions) and take over your account entirely without your knowledge. This very technique is how the personal accounts of Twitter employees were taken over by malicious users.

If you’re a Windows Live Hotmail user, and you want to prevent this from happening, you need to do one of two things:

  • Make absolutely sure you log into your account on a regular basis. Setting a weekly or monthly reminder on your calendar application of choice may aid you with this option.
  • Get a different email account with another provider like Gmail, and change the email addresses on all of your online accounts.

Also, if you’re a paid Windows Live Hotmail user, make sure your subscription is up-to-date. Once a paid Hotmail account subscription runs out, the account simply turns into a free account and becomes subject to the same expiration rules.

Rich countries corner supplies of swine flu vaccine

By Martin Trauth (AFP) – 5 hours ago

PARIS — Governments are scrambling to buy up hundreds of millions of doses of swine flu vaccine but health experts warn the poor may lose out as wealthy countries corner strictly limited supplies.

The World Health Organisation has unofficially estimated that the world’s labs may only be able to produce around 900 million doses for the A(H1N1) strain per year, for a planet that is home to 6.8 billion people.

Global pharmaceutical companies are more optimistic about how much of the drug they can produce but, since each potential victim needs two doses, most of the world’s population will inevitably miss out.

And there are already signs that the wealthiest countries will snap up more than their fair share in the rush to halt the outbreak, while Africa, Asia and Latin American will struggle to secure adequate amounts of vaccine.

“The lion’s share of these limited supplies will go to wealthy countries. Again we see the advantage of affluence. Again we see access denied by an inability to pay,” WHO director Margaret Chan said last week.

France, for example, placed a firm order for 94 million doses of vaccine doses and an option for 36 million more. Starting in October, it hopes to be able to protect each and every member of its population of 64 million.

The United States has set aside at least a billion dollars to buy vaccine, and Britain hopes to protect at least half of its 60 million population by the start of next year and the other half as soon as possible afterwards.

Australia has also ordered enough vaccine for its 21 million population, and as more rich world countries follow suit the world’s potential stock of the drug will soon run out, while prices are set to rise.

“We expressed our concern about being able to count on the vaccine when it starts going on sale,” Argentina’s Health Minister Juan Manzur said last week after meeting worried Latin American colleagues.

“We have information that much of the production is already reserved.”

Pharmaceutical firms are racing to increase their capacity to produce an A(H1N1) vaccine, once tests confirm that one has been developed, and hope to begin releasing stocks in late September or early October.

But even if they manage to make double the expected 900 million doses per year, this would still fall far short of the amount that would be needed to protect every man, woman and child on the planet from the pandemic.

In these circumstances, some countries and independent experts think the best way forward is for authorities to focus on immunising health workers and the most vulnerable patients in order to conserve stocks.

The WHO is negotiating with vaccine producers to secure donations or sales at lower prices for developing countries, while richer nations are being asked to donate some of their vaccine stocks.

Peter Wutzler, president of the German Association for the Fight Against Viral Disease, said he thought his country had made the right decision in only looking to innoculate around a third of its people.

“Vaccine for 30 percent of the population is enough to vaccinate the seven million people in the health sector, another seven million in the public service and risk groups such as pregnant women or children,” he told AFP.

“Germany took account in its order of the fact that pharmaceutical groups have only a limited capacity. They will not be able to provide the whole world with the vaccine,” he warned.

Even this more conservative plan, however, will eat up a large chunk of potential global stocks. Berlin ordered 50 million doses for 25 million people and does not rule out ordering more if the situation worsens.

“I think it is inappropriate that countries have sparked a competition for the vaccine,” said Wutzler.

The swine flu virus has spread to almost every country in the world since it was discovered at the end of March. It was declared a global pandemic in June and is thought to have caused at least 800 deaths.

While it spreads quickly, the A(H1N1) flu variant is so far not regarded as especially dangerous — the vast majority of victims survive and the illness responds to treatment from flu remedies such as Tamiflu.

Experts warn, however, that the virus might mutate and become more deadly, and that with the onset of the winter flu season in the northern hemisphere might become a major health catastrophe.

The moment F1 driver Felipe Massa was knocked unconscious by flying debris during Grand Prix qualifier

July 26, 2009 by themanwithnoname

By Chris Power

Ferrari’s Felipe Massa will be brought out of a coma to have a brain scan in a Budapest hospital today after suffering head injuries in a horrifying 170mph crash during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Six days after Henry Surtees, the teenage son of legendary racer John, died as a result of being hit by the detached wheel of a rival car in a Formula Two race at Brands Hatch, Massa, 28, was also hit by stray debris, a rear suspension spring that had fallen off Rubens Barrichello’s Brawn car.

The spring – they can weigh as much as one kilo – struck the Brazilian on the front-left side of his helmet yesterday, causing him to career off the track, on to grass and then into a tyre wall at the Hungaroring.

Massa hit his head on the steering wheel on impact with the wall and sat motionless in the cockpit as marshals called for medical assistance.

Two ambulances, then additional paramedic backup, arrived. The Ferrari star was carried off on a stretcher and driven to the track’s medical centre before being airlifted to the AEK Military Hospital in Budapest, where he had emergency surgery on a fractured skull and was put in intensive care.

Reports suggested he had bone removed from around his eye socket. He was then put in an induced coma. His brother, Eduardo, was by his bedside until the late evening, as Ferrari fans gathered outside the hospital. His parents, Ana Elena and Luiz Antonio, and pregnant wife, Raffella, are flying in from Brazil to be with him.

Last night the Hungarian Defence Ministry said that Massa, who is unlikely to drive again this season, was in a ’satisfactory condition’. ‘At the time he was admitted to hospital his condition was stable and he was breathing and blood circulation was normal,’ said a spokesman.

HUNGARY FORMULA ONEBrazilian Formula One driver Massa is carried out of his car after the accident at the Hungaroring race track in Budapest

‘During the course of his examination they established that he suffered serious, life-threatening injuries including loss of consciousness and a fracture of the forehead on the left side and a fracture on the base of the skull.

‘He is being cared for in intensive care after surgery on a life-threatening injury and he is now in a stable, satisfactory condition.’

While one of the doctors who had seen Massa warned of possible damage to the driver’s brain, nothing can be certain until experts have examined today’s scan. Ferrari are considering withdrawing their other driver, Kimi Raikkonen, from today’s race. The final session of qualifying was delayed by 20 minutes as Massa’s car was hoisted off the track and taken back to the garage, where it was unloaded piece by piece.

As qualifying restarted, a medical helicopter moved the stricken racer to hospital, accompanied by his brother, Eduardo, and manager Nicolas Todt. Team principal Stefano Domenicali soon followed, and they were later joined by fellow Brazilian Barrichello.

It appeared from film and photographs of the incident that Massa’s visor came away from the screw on his helmet on impact with the debris, although it remains unclear how his eye and forehead came to be so severely injured. There did not appear to be a hole in the visor.

World champion Lewis Hamilton, who fought a titanic title battle with Massa last year, spoke for the entire paddock when he said: ‘I want to send my best wishes to Felipe. It looked quite a big crash, so I hope he’s OK.’

It is 15 years since a Formula One driver last died – Ayrton Senna at Imola in 1994, a loss which caused the then nine-year-old Hamilton to weep for his fallen hero.

Yesterday, Hamilton said: ‘I saw the [Massa] crash. It’s very scary. It has to be a big shock for any driver to have that happen, and very unfortunate because rarely do you see it.’

Referring to the Surtees tragedy, he added: ‘For two incidents to happen in such a short period of time . . . we can’t ignore it.’

Barrichello, who immediately went to see Massa before he was flown to hospital, said: ‘I wanted to be there in case there was nobody from his family there.

‘We are Brazilians and sometimes we have a family, sometimes we don’t, and when we wake up all we want to see is someone we know. Felipe had a cut on his head, which could have been from the part of my car that was on the track.

‘He was talking, he was moving, he was conscious, but they have to analyse the cut. He was moving his arms and legs.

article-1202114-05D70ADA000005DC-178_468x297Medical staff lift Massa into an ambulance

‘They had to make him sleep because he was very agitated. With that, they sedated him to calm him down before they moved him to hospital.’

Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone arrived at the hospital at 10.30pm local time and spent 15 minutes with Massa and his doctors.

He looked stressed and insisted that there would be an immediate review of safety procedures. ‘This is not nice,’ he said. ‘I thought we had seen an end to all this sort of thing. It’s mad. This is just a few days after one death and it is very disturbing.

‘Professor Sid Watkins [F1 medical chief] deals with this and I have spoken to him this evening. He is going to get on to it straight away.’

The problem with Barrichello’s rear suspension caused his team-mate and championship leader Jenson Button to have the failed part replaced on his own car as a precaution. The work was not completed in time for the start of the final session, which meant Button completed only one run rather than two and, therefore, was heavier by about four laps’ worth of fuel because he had burned off less by the time he put in his final flying lap.

article-1202114-05D6F2D3000005DC-601_468x286The injured driver is airlifted by helicopter to hospital

Qualifying ended in confusion with the time screens wiped out and no one knowing the order of the grid.

Button will start in eighth, his lowest position of the season, which makes it tough to withstand the advance of his nearest title rivals, Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber, who start second and third behind Renault’s Fernando Alonso on pole. He said: ‘We’re a little bit off the Red Bulls but I was happy with the car. We’re probably just a 10th [of a second per lap] off their pace.

‘I’m fuelled heavy for the race, which could be good, but we’re so far down I’m not sure it will make any difference.’

Between Button and the Red Bulls will be Hamilton, who will start from a season-best fourth on the grid. With the KERS booster fitted on his McLaren, the British driver could yet compete for a podium finish.
