Michael Jackson dead: reports

Pop legend Michael Jackson is reported to have died of a heart attack after he was rushed to hospital in Los Angeles.

Jackson suffered a cardiac arrest earlier today, according to CNN and entertainment news website TMZ.com.

TMZ is now reporting he has died.

“We’ve just learned Michael Jackson has died,” TMZ said.

“Michael suffered a cardiac arrest earlier this afternoon and paramedics were unable to revive him.

“We’re told when paramedics arrived Jackson had no pulse and they never got a pulse back,” the entertainment website said.

There has been no official confirmation of the reported death and spokespersons for Jackson could not be reached for comment.

Earlier, The LA Times reported paramedics went to the singer’s home and found him not breathing.

The newspaper said paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation at the scene before taking him to the UCLA Medical Centre hospital.

Jackson had been due to start a series of comeback concerts in London on July 13 running until March 2010.

He had been rehearsing in the Los Angeles area for the past two months.

The shows for the 50 London concerts sold out within hours of going on sale earlier this year.

Jackson started out as a child star in the band The Jackson 5 more than 40 years ago.

He has lived as a virtual recluse since his acquittal in 2005 on charges of child molestation.

There have been concerns about Jackson’s health in recent years but the promoters of the London concerts, AEG Live, said in March that Jackson had passed a four-and-a-half hour physical examination with independent doctors.

Bas terbabas masuk longkang

BINTULU: Sebuah bas terbabas masuk ke dalam longkang setelah bertembung dengan sebuah lori kira kira pukul 1130 pagi tadi. Kemalangan juga melibatkan sebuah kancil. Nasib mangsa tidak diketahui ketika berita ditulis.

Kemalangan pada awal pagi tersebut telah menyebabkan kesesakan lalu lintas.

Punca sebenar kemalangan belum diketahui lagi.

B747 Sedia untuk mendarat di LTAK

KUCHING: A B747 aircraft with a full load of passengers onboard will make a historic landing at the Kuching International Airport here tomorrow. The jumbo jet, from Kuala Lumpur, is expected to touch down at 4.40pm, shortly after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has toured the extended airport runway.

“The runway, measuring 3,800m, is the longest in Borneo,” Global Upline Sdn Bhd adviser Tan Sri Ting Pek Khiing said yesterday.

Global Upline is the turnkey contractor of the RM850mil extension project. The airport terminal building has earlier been upgraded and extended.

“The runway can now take the Airbus 380,” Ting said, adding that Najib would receive a certificate from the Department of Civil Aviation to mark the event.

The certificate will then be handed over to acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

Ting said Najib would also open Global Upline’s Four Points by Sheraton Hotel near the airport.

On the RM760mil extension and upgrading project for the Kota Kinabalu Airport runway and terminal two building, Ting said it would be completed in 10 months.

Global Upline is also the contractor for a similar project at the Labuan Airport.

The RM360mil project is also nearing completion.

Stricter H1N1 measures as WHO declares pandemic

PETALING JAYA: More drastic measures including greater screening at entry points into the country will kick in with the declaration of a pandemic for influenza A(H1N1), said Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

Other measures included taking passengers’ temperatures before disembarkation and controlling human traffic from an affected township or village, he said.

He said the ministry would be drawing up a plan to prepare Malaysia for a possible Level Six scenario.

He said ministry officials would also be visiting hospitals and clinics to inform healthcare workers and general practitioners to be prepared and to be on high alert. “The people have to be on high alert. be cautious and follow the ministry’s instructions,” he said.

However, Liow said there was no need to postpone or cancel travel plans as the World Health Organisation (WHO) had not given instructions for border closures.

He said the next step following the declaration of the pandemic was to initiate the National Inter-Ministerial Influenza Pandemic Committee, which will meet next week. Joint regional measures would also be undertaken, he said.

Under the WHO definition, the pandemic – the first since the Mexico Flu in 1968 – meant that the A(H1N1) was spreading from human to human in more than one region.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said the country would have to look at more stringent measures to contain the outbreak.

“At Level Six, we cannot be doing the same as before,” he said, adding that he would be calling for a press conference today on the matter.

Level Six is WHO’s alert level for a pandemic and is the highest alert level it can issue.

Liow also announced that two more cases of influenza A (H1N1) had been confirmed in Malaysia, bringing the total to 11.

The 10th patient is a 17-year-old girl who returned from a holiday in Melbourne on June 9.

She arrived at KL International Airport on Malaysia Airlines MH148 (seat 14A) at 7.30pm and was immediately referred to the Sungai Buloh Hospital after she was found to have a fever of 38.5°C, cough and sore throat. Test results returned positive the following day. The girl is receiving anti-viral treatment and is in stable condition.

The 11th patient is a 41-year-old woman who returned from Manila via Singapore Airlines SQ192 on June 6. Her flight made a transit stop in Singapore before landing in Penang.

She started showing flu symptoms on June 9 and was warded at the Penang General Hospital the following day. At 9am yesterday, her test results returned positive.

Liow said 178 people were still under home quarantine after being in contact with some of the patients. None of them have shown flu symptoms.

Teacher loses RM138,000 in well-organised scam after helping widow

KUALA LUMPUR: A teacher lost about RM138,000 to a Black Money scam syndicate after she helped a widow “save” her money.

Noraini Ahmad, 39, from Ipoh said she was approached by a woman who identified herself as Mrs M. Sulak on Jan 18, asking her for help over US$22mil (RM81mil) in cash left behind by her late husband in his will.

She said that Sulak, supposedly from England, claimed that she was all alone and needed someone to “take care” of the money.

“I was genuinely concerned for her and gave her my particulars and photograph which she later forwarded to her lawyers.

“I did not know then that I had allowed myself to be conned in the scam,” said Noraini when met at the Commercial Crime Investigations Department (CCID) office in Bukit Perdana.

She said she was later contacted by a man claiming to be Sulak’s lawyer who told her that she was to inherit US$22mil left behind by Sulak, who had died of cancer.

The man, who called himself Mr Steven Graham from a law firm in London, contacted her several times.

“He said that to sort out some paperwork, I had to bank in RM35,500 to a CIMB bank account under Steven Graham’s name which I did in several payments,” she said.

Noraini met up with two men, purportedly from London on March 14, one of whom claimed to be an officer from Abbey National Bank and the other a “diplomat” from the United Nations Security Unit in London who was checking on the “authenticity” of transfer.

They told her that the cash was kept in a security vault in Ampang and to have it released, Noraini had to pay another RM27,500.

“They also told me that the notes were special and needed to be washed with a special liquid cleaner,” she said.

“Later the same day, they demonstrated to me by “washing” several US currency notes and gave me US$300 (RM1,050). They said to change the notes at any moneychanger,” she added.

Noraini said she was convinced that the deal was genuine after she changed the notes. So, when the men asked her for another RM75,000, she paid them.

Later, they told Noraini that due to some complications at the vault, the money had been ‘frozen’ and that they had to buy new liquid from Singapore.

“They also asked me to pay another RM75,000 to buy the liquid as there was something wrong with the previous purchase,” she said.

“It was then that it struck me that I had been tricked.

“It was a well-organised scam in which they had baited me from the very beginning,” Noraini said.

She urged Malaysians to be careful, saying: “I am a teacher and yet I was tricked out my life savings.

“They can be very convincing but from this experience, I have learnt that we cannot let ourselves be fooled.

“We must always check with the authorities for verification,” she added.

The Star frontpaged a report yesterday that Malaysians had been conned of as much as RM20mil by African tricksters in the past few years in at least 11 internationally-known scams ranging from Black Money to inheritances which promise non-existent wealth.

3-year-old hospitalised after brutal rape by drunken youth

MIRI: A three-year old girl was brutally raped by a drunken youth at a rural longhouse settlement in Bekenu sub-district some 80kms south of here following a prolonged Gawai drinking spree.

The toddler, who suffered massive bleeding, has been rushed to Miri Hospital.

The youth, said to be 16 years old, was caught by villagers and handed over to the police.

The incident happened late on the first day of Gawai Dayak on June 1 at a longhouse farm not far from the Bekenu bazaar.

Sources said the police have classified the case as rape.

“I can only confirm we have arrested a suspect. This case involves minors. We cannot reveal too much,” said Miri Police deputy chief Supt Ismail Paduka Idris Tuesday.

“But we view this case very seriously,” he said.

According to sources, the attack came to light late on Monday evening at the longhouse when villagers saw the toddler crying and bleeding profusely.

They found her groaning in pain in an isolated hut not far from the longhouse after hearing her cries.

They immediately brought her back to their longhouse and the girl related to the mother that a man from the longhouse had led her to the hut and had taken off her panties and “did something to her’’.

“’The villagers made a citizens’ arrest after the toddler pointed out the suspect to the residents. The suspect was loitering near the longhouse in a state of intoxication when he was detained. He did not put up a fight,’’ said a police source.

Villagers told the police the suspect was working in the farm near the longhouse. The farm belonged to the victim’s grandfather.

They said the suspect was among those who had been indulging in a drinking spree in conjunction with the harvest festival.

The suspect was brought to the Miri Central Police Station Tuesday and is expected to be produced in court soon.
